My wife and begin car shopping tomorrow night to replace the NOX BOX, here is the list.
Subaru XV
Subaru Legacy/outback (I prefer the smaller 4th gens, but they are likely out of our mileage range)
VW Golf Sportwagen
VOLVO XC/V70
VOLVO V60 (?)
Ct200h (I’m more curious that anything at this point.)
She wants a wagon thats slightly bigger than the current one, but still gets reasonable mileage. We would both prefer manuals but we are realistic about what we’re going to find.
I think she’s nixed the CX5, though I think I am going to try and get her to at least look at them in real life.
Looking at ~25 grand budget
under 30k miles (and less than 10 years old)
hopefully CPO or still under warranty
Any other wagon things that meet the criteria that you can think of?

Volvo V60 is very, very nice. We had one in a while back for a sunroof and I got to deliver it. If it wasn't $32,000 it would have gone on the shortlist for a Soul replacement.

The only trouble with the v60 is that its small (same with the Ct200h/Subaru XV). I mean the Sportwagen is about the smallest car we could handle I think. I know, I know its the whole American excess things...but we travel with the kids and things take up space.

The XV is significantly smaller in usable space as its really just a lifted Impreza. I’d be interested to know how she feels about the interior I wasn’t impressed with it.
If you want any chance with the CX5 with her make sure its a 2014 or newer as thats when the 2.5L replaced the 2.0L in the Touring and Grand Touring. The difference between the pickup in the two engines is noticeable and coming from my TDI I refuse to drive anything with that 2.0L

Its high on my list, and hers.

In that case look at an outback. $25k can still get a lot of Subaru and they hold value like Toyota trucks.

yeah, at our elevation its going to be tough to find a suitable replacement for a TDI. I would definitely never get the 2.0

Good luck, I spent last Friday sitting at the Subaru dealer while they changed my keys over. As I sat there eating dealership popcorn in their waiting room I looked out over the sea of new models..
The XV is neat - just like the impreza obs.. I was suprized by how small it is though. No way it would pass my wife’s blind-spot test.
Current Forester is solidly lost in the crv/escape/rav4 pointy/slanty/angles-all-wrong camp.
The 5th gen outbacks are nice, but they are big.. They had a Premier with woodgrain dash that was getting uncomfortably close to minivan size.
There were a few 4th gens still and I really liked them until I got up front..
Plus eyesight everywhere..
In the end I was super happy when they gave me back the keys to my Forester that was still a wagon, I thanked them for the popcorn and booted it home.

I drove the 2013 and 2014 back to back and the highway merge part of the test drive made that an easy decision. I’m currently hoping I can snag a CPO 2014 (or 15) Grand Touring off a lease turn in for 23k or 24k.

Like the idea of a subaru, but the 5th gen Outback is HUGE and the mileage sucks...its not high on my list but I realize im probably being picky.

yeah...they lost my interest in about 2009 and its all been downhill from there imo...still...worth a look.

Wonder when the last Saab wagons were produced? They did make that GMish AWD crossoverish thing - probably slushbox only though.

If you don’t really want a Subaru put her in the new 2017 Forrester that is sitting at your price point (Premium) it will solve all of your Subaru problems. On a positive note its a great example of how you should not do interior plastics.

Apparently the ‘17 Sportwagen will offer 4motion with a stick. I’m quite tempted, though I’d prefer that combo in regular Golf hatchback form.
The 1.8TSI/5-speed/fwd I’ve got returns great mileage, FWIW. I think I average close to 40mpg.

and only a third over budget too

When I was in Utah last year, I saw TONS of XVs.
Might as well blend in, right?

17 VW Golf Sportwagen, may be slightly over budget, by a g or 2, but really worth brand new and manual

BMW 328d Sports Wagon

The new Volvo 4 cylinders are doing some really horrible things per El_Uly, might not want to buy a first year car.

Understood. On the plus side, I think you can get a new base manual Golf Sportwagen for just under $20k — but allow me to guess that she will want some options.

Our tdi didn’t have options but it did come pretty well loaded.

I have a work buddy with a ct200h and he really like it, (not as fast as his Forester XT but WAY better mileage and nicer interior.) We just got a Crosstrek for my wife and it’s nice - not as big as an outback but if you don’t need the space, definitely work looking at and you can get one brand new for under 25,000. Another buddy has a 2016 outback with the 2.5 and cvt and he really likes it - no issues other than the touchscreen media player occasionally likes to reset itself.
